Calcite, Siderite, Hematite - Leiping Mine, China
Calcite. CaCO3. But not just any ordinary Calcite. The find from the Leiping Mine in 1996 rewrote our fundamental understanding of how minerals crystallize. It's a basic temperature/pressure differential, and Calcite is the most studied mineral for how this happens. Calcite has 57 known different crystallization habits, and Dovetail twinning is the most uncommon. This specimen does not fluoresce in the way you think it should. There is no Mn-activator. There is very little (if you squint your eyes hard enough and the surroundings are truly pitch black) to no reaction to LW/MW-UV light. Specimen comes unmounted and labeled, ready for your display.
