A delightful specimen of one of the first minerals that humans learned how to process, from one of the longest-producing deposits known to man. This is Cinnabar. A Sulfide of Mercury. The deposit around the city of Tongren in Guizhou Province, China, has produced Cinnabar (and thus liquid elemental Mercury) for at least 3,000 years and just keeps giving.
It is widely believed that the Mercury used in the tombs of ancient Chinese emperors came from this deposit, creating tombs that are so toxic that even today the government of China will not allow them to be opened.
This specimen boasts a wonderful contrast of bright red Cinnabar against cream-colored Dolomite crystals and glassy, colorless crystals of Quartz.
The specimen comes mounted and labeled, ready for your display.
